Christmas Gifts for Gardeners.

Christmas Gifts for Gardeners.

Caution! Poetry has broken out at Capital Gardens as Ali Barwani takes a light-hearted look at gardening items perfect for gifting at Christmas!

Gardeners are easy to buy for because there are always things we need like nice hand-tools to help us weed.

Gloves get holes, secateurs disappear along with other gardening gear (or are borrowed and not returned – you know who you are!). Twine runs out just when its needed, and the New Year means seed sowing once winter has receded.

So, gardener or Christmas shopper, your local Capital Gardens garden centre is the perfect place for you to enter!

We have plenty of gardening related gifts, from stocking fillers to big-ticket item thrillers!

If you are stuck for gift inspiration let us share some helpful information:

C is for Christmas cactus (Schlumbergia) with bright colours to distract us. They are only available for a short window as Christmas nears and make beautiful houseplants that last for many years.

C is also for Cans. We may have a lot of rain at present but remember how dry this summer was! A shiny new watering-can makes a super gift for the gardening fan.

C is for our Children’s ranges. Be cool and give the kids a garden tool this yule!

H is for Hand cream, soft and soothing for work-worn hands that need some smoothing. Don’t let smooth hands harden, protect them with gloves for the garden. Nice gloves make a very acceptable gardening gift.

H is also for Holster, clipped over your waistband, keeps those small tools close to hand.

R is for Rooting Gel, use this for taking cuttings and they will do well.

R also stands for Raffia, a natural product made from the dried and shredded leaves of the palmyra palm tree. Raffia is a soft and gentle tying material for soft stems. Natural raffia also adds an artisanal finishing touch to Christmas gift wrapping.

I is for Ilex verticillata – the winterberry, it will help make your Christmas displays merry.

This deciduous holly carries masses of long lasting, glossy, scarlet berries. Available as cut stems that are ideal for displaying in a vase or adding a splash of colour to your wreath designs.

I also stands for irrigation, ensuring favourite plants have good hydration. The flexible Gardena ‘Quick and Easy’ micro drip system saves water and time – a shift in the watering paradigm.

S is for Secateurs, everyone’s favourite cutters.

Do you know your anvil from your bypass? If not, why not pop in and see us? We’d love to give you a helping hand to find the right pair for the jobs you have planned. For the pruning maven we stock Fiskars, fine Finnish tools.

S also stands for Seed packets, which make lovely surprise gifts. Hidden inside Christmas cards place future plants with best regards.

T is for Tags and labels to help us keep track of plant pots on garden tables.

Winter also reminds us of Thermometers, useful in the garden and the conservatory to record the lows of winter and the highs of summer. Digital, long, window dial or wood – each will do the job it should.

M is for mugs – a hot brew is welcomed by the gardener pausing from battling slugs. And happiness is just a dunked biscuit away on a cold winter’s day.

M also stands for packets of Mycorrhizal fungi the gardener’s ally.

A is for aprons to protect you and your clothes. It also stands for the gardener’s Almanac, the secret behind the gardener who knows! A is for an Amaryllis the perfect gift for aunty Phyllis.

S is for Scissors and balls of soft string for tying up unruly shoots that coil and spring!

S is for Sarcococca confusa, the Christmas box – a tough evergreen whose rich perfume fills the garden when its abloom.

If the gardener in your life is looking forward to turkey dinner with all the trimmings, rich Christmas pudding and mince pies then a spot of gardening in the New Year is wise. So why not visit us and chose gardening goodies and beat the high street queues? After all, Christmas comes but once a year, so let’s give gifts of gardening gear!
