Runner Bean Lady Di Thompson & Morgan
‘Lady Di’ is an exceptional scarlet red flowered variety that produces long slim and blemish free pods of the highest quality. The harvest is rich and prolonged. The long slender beans are slow to develop seeds which means the pods can stay on the plant for longer before they become tough, which gives you more time to harvest.
Resistant to disease and a wonderful heat tolerance, they will produce pretty, fiery red flowers which develop into 25 to 30cm long fleshy and stringless beans growing 1.7cm wide. They will remain stringless even when matured.
Winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit ‘Lady Di’ is not only edible but will make a colourful garnish to enjoy, and the pods are delicious when they are young and tender.
Plant in a position with moist, fertile soil in a sunny and sheltered plot. Sow successionally from April to July. If planting outdoors, wait until the last frosts are over.
Sow your seeds early indoors and this will give a faster and more reliable germination rate. Sow at the end of April 4cm deep in 7.5cm pots filled with multipurpose compost. Water and leave to germinate on a sunny windowsill for up to three weeks. Before planting out, put them into a cold frame to acclimatise them to the outdoor conditions.
You can directly sow your bean seeds outdoors from mid may to mid June, sowing 5cm deep next to a cane for support when growing.
This wonderful variety will not only be a new favourite of yours, but will also encourage vital insects into your garden.

Sow from late winter to mid spring at 15-18C in good seed compost. Sow on the surface of good quality compost and gently firm down. Keep your soil damp but not wet and do not exclude any light as this will help with germination. Germination takes up to 15 days. When your seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them and grow on in cooler conditions until they are large enough to grow outdoors. When your plants are more established, and there is no risk of frost, acclimatise your plants to outdoor conditions for up to 10 days. Plant out in a sheltered and sunny position with fertile and well drained soil at a distance of up to 30cm apart.
