  • Cornflower Classic Fantastic Thompson & Morgan

    The Cornflower ‘Classic Fantastic’ also known as ‘Blue-Bottle’ or ‘Bachelors Buttons’ features a beautiful mixture of single and semi-double blooms in shades of cool blue that range from fresh light blue to dark, and blue and white bicolour.
    Easy to grow with a long lasting flower display, they are perfect for a summer bed or border. You can enjoy them in your home too, as a cut-flower, or even add the petals to salads as a colourful garnish- you can also add them to omelettes and pasta dishes! And this hardy annual will attract vital pollinating insects into your garden.
    Sow your cornflower seeds outdoors where you wish for them to grow from March to April.
    Choose a position in full sun with well-drained soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. Then sow your seeds thinly at a depth of 3mm in drills of up to 30cm apart. Water regularly especially during dry periods. Germination should take up to 21 days. Once the Cornflowers are large enough to handle, thin them out to 15cm apart.
    Alternatively you can grow your Cornflowers indoors from August to September for an early summer flowering the next year. Sow on the surface of good quality compost at a temperature of up to 23C and cover finely with compost or vermiculite. Do not exclude light as this helps with the germination process. When large enough to handle, transplant into cooler conditions until they are large enough to plant outdoors.
    Overwinter Cornflower plants in a cool, light and frost-free location before planting the following spring, alternatively grow in a greenhouse and a pot plant.
