Winner of 2004 BALI National Landscape Award
Award for: Domestic Garden Scheme (cost between £10,000 and £50,000)
Project: Build of domestic garden in Golders Green, London.
The judges said: "A delightful project which reflects the age of the house, but at the same time offer a modern feel that links in well to the spacious extension. There is a good mixture of planting. About a third of the garden is devoted to a woodland type setting which creates a most interesting feature in this suburban garden. All work is of a high standard."
Project Brief:
The client had decided to undertake a significant extension to the house thereby eating into what was already a small paved area. The extension was to be furbished in a contemporary style with clean straight lines and large windows and doors to create a feeling of outdoors whilst inside the building.
The brief was to create a vista to be viewed from inside the new extension, whilst keeping a more traditional feel towards the rear of the garden with the creation of a perfectly level croquet lawn which the family could enjoy. Due to costs incurred during the creation of the house extension, the garden had to be built within strict budgetary contraints.
The challenge posed was that the area was divided down its length by a significant slope which needed to be incorporated into the design. This aspect was dealt with by the creation of a 'woodland walk', allowing for a sense of seclusion which further highlights the openness of the lawn and paved areas. The use of natural materials allows it to retain a traditional and country cottage feel, which complements the other tradtional and contemporary elements.
Work Completed: The first stage of work involved digging out for a new sunken patio and keeping the resulting soil to be used to raise the levels for the mini-croquet lawn. The soil was levelled and retained using timber rounds. The small curved pergola enhances the curve of the lawn and provides a suitable focal point for the back of the garden. The paving was chosen to reflect the clean lines of the new house extension whilst also keeping budget in mind. The wide expansive steps open up the whole garden from inside the extension.
Mixed planting provides seasonal colour and evergreen structure reflecting the different environments. Lighting highlights planting and the lower paved area.
The client is delighted with the increase in usable space and spend hours looking from the house into the garden where it is perfectly framed by the large patio doors.
