It is Nova policy to encourage the concessions and plantations from which their timber is sourced to adopt a responsible environmental policy and seek to obtain independent certification, so that they can increasingly offer hardwood garden furniture from forests which are managed to the FSC’s high environmental and social standards. The Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) is an independent and non-governmental international body with its Head Office in Bonn, which was founded in 1993 to establish and oversee a system of forest certification and product labeling. The UK Working Group was established in February 1995 and is a registered charity (Charity No 1060072). Although at the time of going to press (August 2006), little over 73 million hectares in more than 72 countries have been certified to FSC standards, only a small area of teak plantation has been certified and this teak is in short supply. It is Nova policy, wherever possible, to purchase hardwood products where both the timber source and intermediate stages in producing a finished product can be subject to full FSC certification. All FSC certified products are identified by the FSC ‘treetick’ logo.
