Your How to ... Tomato kit contains:
- Outer card pot
- Peat pot
- Magic compost block
- Gardener's Delight Tomato seed
Sow: February - April and your be sampling your tomatoes July - October
How to grow your own tomatoes:
- Remove top from cup. Take out peat block and seeds.
- Place magic peat block in bottom of Suttons peat pot.
- Very slowly pour 1/2 cup of WARM water onto peat block and watch it grow!!
- Allow 5 mins for peat block to expand fully.
- Fluff peat block with pencil until crumbly.
- Push 3 seeds pinted end down into peat until they disappear.
- Place pot in cup and replace top (upside down) and put somewhere warm unti your seeds start to sprout in 5-7 days. The seeds need warmth and moisture to germinate. The seed coat splits and the tiny shoots (which will form the stem and leaves) appear together with the 'radicle' (the name for the beginnings of the root system).
- Remove the top and place under cup as a drip tray.
- Put somewhere sunny and keep moist until first leaves appear.
- Remove the peat pot from paper cup.
- Gently tease two of the seedlings out and plant them separately into other pots. Water well.
- Watch how quick they grow! - you may need to move your plants to a larger pot.
- When danger of frost has passed (May-June) plant your tomatoes in teh garden 45cm apart in a sunny spot. Water plants as they grow. When the tomatoes grow little shoots at the side snap these off so the plant puts its energy into growing fruit. Give each plant a cane for support and tie the plant gently to it as it gets bigger. Water well as the plant grows.

- What colour is the skin of a tomato? Why red of course!! well actually no - if you carefully peel the skin from a red tomato you will find it is yellow/ It is the red pigment from the flesh below which gives the tomato its characteristic colour.
- There are lots of different shapes and sizes in tomatoes, plum shaped and anything from grape sized to fruit the size of melon.
