Attract birds to your garden with Suttons 'fun to grow' Feed The Birds kit.
Feed The Birds kit contains:
- 4 x 7.5cm pots
- Magic compost blocks
- Bird attracting seed mix - including cornflowers and poppies - for sowing April - June
- Wild Birds activity sheet
How to use your Feed The Birds kit:
- Place a compost block in one pot in an empty sink. Add water and watch the block grow like magic. Level the compost and sprinkle some seed sparingly onto the compost surface (keep your other pots for use later). We suggest you plant any remaining seed direct into the garden - more plants mean more feed for the birds!
- Place pot on a warm windowsill but not in direct sunshine (15C) and cover with paper. Keep moist and when the tiny plants appear carefully tease out the other plants to leave one central one. At this stage, start off your other 3 pots and transfer one of your spare plants to each. You can transfer any other spare plants to pots or trays.
- Grow on a windowsill in a cooler room (15C). When your plants are approx 10-15cm high in June - July plant them out in the garden together with any others you have grown around 30cm apart. Your 'Feed the Birds' will grow quickly - water them well in dry weather.
Fun Facts about Bird Feeding
- DID YOU KNOW some birds are seed eaters, eg Greenfinch, so included in your flower mixture are seed producing flowers like sunflowers.
- Other birds feed on insects, eg. Swallows, so we have made sure that among your plants there are flowers that will attract insects to your garden and encourage the birds.
Learning: Your child will learn elements of the National Curriculum including seed germination and plant growth. Growing from seed teaches a child dexterity and in the case of this kit, about wild birds and how to encourage them to your garden.
